Solar-powered irrigation system installed at Benguet Prov’l agri-demo farm in Kabayan The provincial government of Benguet has recently completed the P3.3 million installation of a solar-powered irrigation system and additional water supply distribution system at its agri-demo farm in Adaoay, Kabayan, Benguet. Governor Dr. Melchor Daguines Diclas said the newly installed solar-powered facility is seen not only to ensure water supply in the said demo-farm but will also reduce expenses as well as address power problems at the facilities in the farm particularly during heavy rains.

According to Dr. Miriam Tiongan, Provincial Veterinarian, there have been instances where newly born pigs or newly hatched chicks undergoing brooding died due to long period of power interruption caused by heavy rains or typhoons. “Sometimes we also experience power outage even during light rains,” she added.
There is a need for an uninterrupted power supply to take good care of the animals undergoing brooding so the farm will maintain or even increase its production, Dr. Tiongan said.
Aside from holding training on agricultural techniques and technologies among the locals and other interested farmers, the PVet through the demo-farm also loans out animals to farmer beneficiaries to help them increase their livestock production.
